The Dhahan Prize organization arranged for a trip for myself and my esteemed colleague Sadhu Binning to meet some of the great literary minds of Pakistan, and have an opportunity to share our work as well. Below are thoughts in English and Punjabi of my first visit to West Punjab.
ਪੁਲ
ਏਧਰਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆ ਵੀ ਓਧਰਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੁੰਘੜ ਗਏ ਲਗਦੇ ਸਨ।
ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਲੁਧਿਅਣੇ ਤੋਂ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਤੇ ਬਿਆਸ ਦੇਖੇ ਸਨ। ਜੇਹਲਮ ਤੇ ਚਨਾਬ ਦੋ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਸਲਾਮਾਬਾਦ ਜਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਦੇਖਣੇ ਸਨ। ਲਾਹੌਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਨਕਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਰਾਵੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਟਾਵੇਂ ਥਾਵਾਂ `ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਪੜੀਆਂ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਦਿਸਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਸੁੱਕੇ ਰਾਵੀ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆ `ਤੇ ਘਾਹ ਚਰਦੇ ਮੱਝਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਗ ਦਿਸੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਝੱਟ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਿਰਮੌਰ ਕਹਾਣੀਕਾਰ ਕਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿਰਕ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਵਿਰਕ ਦਾ ਮੱਝਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਡੁੱਲ -ਡੁੱਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਛਣ `ਤੇ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਰਘਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਵਿਰਕ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਨਮ ਭੋਏਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਾਂ। ਸ਼ੇਖੂਪੁਰੇ ਜਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੁਲਰਵਾਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਹੀ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਗਿਆ।ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ। ਇਹ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਨਨਕਾਣਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਬਾਬੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਈ ਗੁਣਾ ਵਧ ਗਿਆ। ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਜੰਡਿਆਲਾ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਖਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਰਿਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਮਜ਼ਾਰ `ਤੇ ਹੀਰ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ, ਕਸੂਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਧ `ਤੇ ਬਾਬੇ ਦਾ ਕਲਾਮ ਮਾਣਦਿਆਂ, ਲਾਹੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਪੋਠੋਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ `ਤੇ ਵਿਚਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਉੱਚ ਦੁਮਾਲੜੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿਆ ਲਗਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਅਸੀਂ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਪਰਾਈਜ ਦੇ ਨਿਉਂਦੇ `ਤੇ ਸਮਕਾਲੀ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਵਾਦ ਰਚਾਉਣ ਗਏ ਸੀ। ਉਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹਵੰਤੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਾਹਾਂ ਫਿਲਾਅ ਕੇ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ। ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਹਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖੀ ਵਿੱਚ। ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਖਾਈ ਸੀ। ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਪਰਾਈਜ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਾਰਜ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਘਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਨੂੰ 'ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ, ਆਰਟ ਐਂਡ ਕਲਚਰ ਦੀ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਜਨਰਲ ਸੁਗਰਾ ਸਾਦਫ ਨਾਲ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਲਿਪੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ-ਦੂਜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਪੀਆਂਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਮਨਸੂਬੇ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਪੁਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਲੱਗੇ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੇਖਕ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਮਾਣਮੱਤਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਡਾ. ਬੀ ਐਸ ਘੁੰਮਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੀਵੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਗਲਿਆਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਟੂਰ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ, ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ ਦਲੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਟਿਵਾਣਾ ਦੇ ਗੋਡੇ-ਮੁੱਢ ਬੈਠਣਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ ਰਮਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਟੀ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਅਰੁਨ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਗਰੋਵਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੈਂਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਅ ਆਇਆਂ ਕਹਿਣਾ, ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ-ਵਿਦਿਆਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਵਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣੇ, ਇਹ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਤਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ! ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਕੌਂਸਲਰ ਜਨਰਲ ਡਾ. ਕ੍ਰਿਸਟੋਫਰ ਗਿਬਨਜ਼ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਸਤਿੰਦਰ ਚੀਮਾ, ਬਾਰਜ ਢਾਹਾਂ, ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਰਘਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਦਾ ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਰਨਾ, ਡਾ ਗਿਬਨਜ਼ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਕਰਨਾ, ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤਰੀ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਦਮ-ਕੱਦ ਪੋਸਟਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੀਅ ਆਇਆਂ ਕਰਨਾ, ਇਹ ਸਭ ਮੈਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਕਿਆਸਿਆ ਸੀ!
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਾਤਮਕ ਸਫਰ ਕਨੇਡਾ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਧਰਾਤਲ ਕਨੇਡਾ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਕਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਦੇ ਸਾਊਥ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਾਤਮਕ ਸਫਰ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਕੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਨਵੇਕਲੇ ਇਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਆਪਣੀ ਜਨਮ ਭੂਮੀ `ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਰਮ ਭੂਮੀ ਦੀ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਲੇਖਕ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਐਡੇ ਮਾਣਮੱਤੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਿਆ।

Bridge
The rivers of Western Punjab appear that they are narrowing like those of Eastern Punjab.
What I had seen one day earlier of Beas and Sutlej while traveling to Attari from Ludhiana, I would see two days later of Jhelum and Chenab while visiting Islamabad. On the way to Nankana Sahib from Lahore, I noticed the water in Ravi had significantly decreased. On the banks of the dry Ravi, there were herds of buffalos enjoying the grass which reminded me of the excellent story writer, Kalwant Singh Virk. The love for buffaloes in Virk's stories is very obvious. Dr Raghbir Singh Sarjana mentioned that we were traveling in Virk's birthplace. His native village, Fulrwan, in Sheikhupura district was nearby. My heart filled with joy, as if I had found a treasure. When I reached Nankana Sahib, this joy was multiplied by the thought of Baba Nanak. I was in a different world on hearing the poems of Waris Shah at Jandiala Sher Khan, and fame of Baba Bulleh Shah at his mazar in Kasur. In the land of Lahore and Pothohar, I was filled with joy while reminiscing about our highly esteemed writers who were born in this region.
A literary tour was arranged in Pakistan by the Dhahan Prize organization for contemporary writers to meet and interact. While the famous writers of the locale welcomed us with gusto, they had not read my stories and I had not read their's - they write in Shahmukhi script and I write in Gurmukhi. We had a trench between us. When I heard that Dr. Raghbir Singh and Barj Dhahan are planning to transcribe the books of both the scripts together with Sugarga Saadf, the director of Punjab Institute of Language Arts and Culture, I felt like they are becoming a bridge for both worlds.

A proud sense of being a Punjabi writer
Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr. BS Ghuman and his wife were touring the corridors of the University. Sitting on stage next to Dr. Dilip Kaur Tiwana during the function; being welcomed by Dr. Raminder Kaur at Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar) and V.C. of Punjab University (Chandigarh) ; having Arun Kumar Grover welcome us at the campus; speaking in front of students in three universities and answering their questions - it all seemed like a dream! Canada's Councillor General Dr. Christopher Gibbons and his assistant Satinder Cheema, Barj Dhahan, Harvinder Kaur Dhahan and Dr Raghbir Singh Sirjna, accompanied us all throughout this entire period. Dr. Gibbons even arranged dinner in his house to welcome us. I had never anticipated all this!
I started my creative journey from the land of Canada. The land of my stories is the land of Canada. My compositions are about South Asian people living in Canada, the person who arranged this literary tour is one of them. What a great pleasure to my creative journey to represent my adopted country in my birth country. With this thought, I had a proud sense of being a Punjabi writer.
